The European Parliament today voted in favour of both the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) and Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada.

The European Parliament today voted in favour of both the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) and Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada.

This paves the way for a further deepening of EU-Canada political discussions, foreign policy cooperation, and engagement across a huge number of different sectors and thematic issues. Canada is a partner with which the EU shares common values and principles: of democracy, freedoms, sustainable economic growth, inclusiveness and diversity as a strength of our societies.

"After the European Parliament voted for the EU-Canada trade and political agreements, our friendship will grow even stronger now," said High Representative Federica Mogherini, who will tomorrow meet Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland at the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting.

SPA and CETA will enable intensified discussions between the European Union and Canada on areas and topics of mutual interest such as climate change, the environment, employment, social affairs, sustainable economic development, and justice and home affairs issues, as well as foreign and security policy. Negotiations for SPA were launched in September 2011, alongside CETA, with a view to replacing the outdated 1976 Framework Agreement for Commercial and Economic Cooperation. and was adopted by the European Commission in April 2015. The Agreement was initialled in September 2014 and was adopted by the European Commission in April 2015.

Today's positive vote by the European Parliament concludes the ratification processes of both agreements at an EU level and allows for their provisional application once procedures are completed on the Canadian side.
