Statement by the spokesperson on the establishment of the peace dialogue table between the Government of Colombia and the ELN on 7 February in Quito

The start of the public phase of peace negotiations between the Government of Colombia and the ELN in Quito on 7 February, is a positive development in Colombia's quest for lasting and sustainable peace. We encourage both parties to intensify efforts in a spirit of mutual responsibility and compromise, with a view to reaching a comprehensive agreement. We call on the ELN to seize this opportunity to prove its commitment to the negotiations by renouncing violence and all other violations of international humanitarian law.

While the peace agreement with the FARC is already being implemented, all actors in Colombia must continue to fulfil their responsibility for the peace process. Peace building needs the long term investment of all Colombians – whether still in negotiations or already working on disarmament, the strengthening of the democratic state and the building of an inclusive society.

The European Union will continue to support the Colombian government in its efforts to bring durable peace, security and prosperity to all Colombians.
