Statement by the Spokesperson on the latest attack in Mali

Text

The latest attack on the Operational Coordination Mechanism in Gao, killing and wounding dozens belonging to the Malian armed forces, Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) and the Platform, is an act against all Malians and against the peace process. This attack was intended to block implementation of the peace agreement and halt the process of national reconciliation. The perpetrators of these acts must be held responsible and brought to justice.

The European Union extends its sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims and wishes the wounded a speedy recovery. It expresses its solidarity with all the parties involved in the peace and reconciliation agreement, as well as with all the people of Mali.

The European Union stands firmly alongside Mali in order to contribute to stability, reconciliation and peace in the country. More than ever, the people of Mali and the international community must remain united in the face of threats from the enemies of peace in the country.
