I congratulate the elected President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, following the announcement by the Provisional Electoral Council of the final result of the presidential election.
I am confident that under his presidency Haiti will benefit from the political stability and good governance that the country so badly needs. All political forces should now look to the future and work together for the good of the country and its people. There is an urgent need to address the many challenges with regard to the rule of law, citizen security, justice and respect for human rights, and to improve the living conditions of the population, which have been further worsened by the devastating impact of Hurricane Matthew.
The European Union is fully mobilised and will continue to support Haiti in all its recovery efforts.
I would also like to pay tribute to the commitment of interim President Jocelerme Privert and all those who ensured the operation of the electoral process and respect of the right of citizens to vote freely.
