Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, had a call with Foreign Minister of Turkey, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.
She expressed condolences after the terrorist attack in Kayseri today.
The EU strongly condemns all acts of terrorism. The PKK, including its affiliate TAK, is listed as a terrorist organisation in the EU, with action being taken against them by the EU institutions and the Member States.
The EU confirms our continued commitment to working with the Government of Turkey in combatting the threat of terrorism. It is essential that all institutions and all political forces stand together in unity, and that full respect of the rule of law is guaranteed.
The High Representative and the Minister also discussed at length the situation in Syria, and notably in Aleppo and other besieged areas. The European Union continues its humanitarian support to Syrians in need, including refugees in Turkey, as the presence of Commissioner Christos Stylianides in a refugee camp in Turkey just today clearly demonstrates.
Federica Mogherini and Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu exchanged views on their respective diplomatic efforts and contacts in these days to guarantee protection of civilians in Syria, an immediate ceasefire, and the start of political negotiations under UN auspices. They agreed they will continue to keep a constant channel of dialogue open in the coming days and coordinate respective diplomatic initiatives.
