The situation in Kasese District: Statement by the European Union

The European Union deplores the violence in Kasese district, which culminated in the incidents of 27 November 2016, resulting in the reported loss of lives of more than 100 civilians and members of the security forces.

Text

The EU notes the follow-up by the authorities, and the investigations being carried out by the Parliamentary Defence and Internal Affairs Committee and the Uganda Human Rights Commission.

The EU encourages full investigations in a timely, inclusive and transparent manner, according to due process and the rule of law.  The EU looks forward to the outcome of these investigations being made public.

The EU also stresses the importance – and stands ready to assist – in addressing the root causes of conflict by all concerned through dialogue.
