Today EU High Representative Federica Mogherini met Mr Beji Caid Essebsi, during the first visit by a Tunisian President to the European institutions.

The meeting is a key political step in the process of strengthening the close partnership and strategic relationship between the European Union and Tunisia.

The two parties announced the launch of the EU-Tunisia Youth Partnership, an initiative based on a shared vision of the future they want to create for Tunisia and Europe.

'EUR 400 million has already been earmarked to help Tunisian youth, for education, employment and mobility' said the High Representative. 'The European Union has pledged to enable 1 500 young Tunisians to come to Europe and the EU each year, with the Erasmus+ programme for students. This really is a joint initiative that we have developed in close collaboration with the President, to invest in his country's young people.'

The European Union's financial commitment could increase by an additional EUR 600 million for the period 2017-2020.
