Federica Mogherini has visited Teheran and Riyadh as part of her outreach to key actors in the region on the future of Syria, following the decisions taken by the Foreign Affairs Council and the European Council.

Last Saturday, the High Representative travelled to Iran.

She held productive discussions with Foreign Minister Zarif and President Rohani. She is holding similar discussions with other regional actors aimed at seeking common ground that could also facilitate the resumption of UN mediated intra-Syrian talks. Today Mogherini was in Riyadh. She was received by the King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz and Dr. Nizar Madani, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia.

Peace in Syria can only be agreed by Syrians under the UN framework mediated by the Special Envoy. But the EU can help in creating the conditions for that to happen, working with key regional powers, and once an agreement is reached and a political transition has begun, the EU can and will do a lot, working with others, to promote reconciliation and to help the Syrians rebuild their country.

HRVP also discussed with her interlocutors the urgent humanitarian situation on the ground in Syria and the need to allow humanitarian aid into besieged areas together with medical evacuations from East Aleppo, the four towns and all other besieged areas.

The cooperation with regional players is key to create the conditions for the physical, political and social reconstruction of Syria after the conflict.
