2016 EU-Taiwan International Food Trade Seminar: "For Safer and Better Food”

The European Economic and Trade Office (EETO), in the framework of the European Business Regulatory Cooperation (EBRC) Programme in Taiwan, hosted the 2016 EU-Taiwan International Food Trade Seminar to encourage the discussions on safer and better food.

The European Economic and Trade Office (EETO), in the framework of the European Business Regulatory Cooperation (EBRC) Programme in Taiwan, hosted the 2016 EU-Taiwan International Food Trade Seminar to encourage the discussions on safer and better food. The EU and Taiwan experts shared experience in four sessions: SPS audits and inspections in the EU and Taiwan and trading partner countries; animal disease control in the EU and Taiwan and regionalisation in the EU; border and behind-the-border measures ensuring food safety; as well as modern regulation of organic products and best practices.

The seminar brought together around 200 government officials, experts and business representatives from the EU and Taiwan to share experience on international food trade issues. Madeleine MAJORENKO, Head of the EETO, Francis LIANG Kuo-Hsin (梁國新), Chairman of TAITRA, and CHANG Su-San (張淑賢), Director General of BAPHIQ, delivered opening remarks at the seminar.

The European Economic and Trade Office (EETO) co-hosted the seminar with the Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) , Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), the Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) and the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ) under the Council of Agriculture (COA) hosted the 2016 EU-Taiwan International Food Trade Seminar. The Taiwan Food Industry Development Association (TFIDA) and the China Productivity Center (CPC) supported the event.

The European experts were: Ulrich WEIGL, DG TRADE, Liisa RANTAMÄKI, Food and Veterinary Office (FVO), Benoît SAUVEROCHE, Food and Veterinary Office (FVO), Anna Luca VECSEI, National Food Chain Safety Office, Directorate of Animal Health and Animal Welfare Department of Epidemiology, Hungary, Rami BAITIEH, Carrefour Taiwan, Oana SURDU, DG AGRI, and Corentin JOYEUX, Bio Planète.

The Taiwanese experts were: PENG Jia-Feng (彭家芬), Animal Quarantine Division, BAPHIQ, CHEN Su-Chin (陳素琴), BAPHIQ, WU Tsung Hsi (吳宗熹), Food Imports Management, TFDA, PENG Ming-Hsing (彭明興), Animal Health Inspection Division, BAPHIQ, Kenneth CHAN Yeh-Lin (詹岳霖), Taisun Group, WANG Wen-Liang (王文良), Agriculture and Food Agency, and Mark CHANG (張盛玄), Shilin High Quality Bamboo Farm.

Apart from the seminar, high quality food products from Taiwan, and a number of the EU countries were on display at the venue. Participants were able to not only sample the products on display but also gain a greater understanding of the items, which included wine, jam, organic and other agricultural products.
