CEUMC's official visit to Lebanon

From the 8th to the 11th of September, the Chairman of the EU Military Committee payed an official visit to the Lebanese Republic.

General Graziano during the visit had the opportunity to meet the President of the Lebanese Republic, H.E. Gen. Michel AOUN, the speaker of the Parliament, H.E. Mr Nabih BERRI, the caretaker Prime Minister, H.E. Mr Hassan DIAB, the LAF Commander, General Jospeh AOUN, the Director General for General Security, General Abbas IBRAHIM, the Head of Mission and UNIFIL Force Commander, Major General Stefano DEL COL and the caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, H.E. Ms Zeina Akar ADRA.

The main topics of discussion during the official meetings were the current political stalemate and the consequent economic crisis in the Country, intensified by the situation of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and the lack of fuel and electricity. On these occasions, the Chairman underlined the EU support for the resolution of the critical situation in the Country, by the provision of funds for food supplies, medical assistance as well as fuel and electricity provision, stressing above all the importance of the constitution of a new government. Gen. Graziano has assured the significant sustenance of EU addressed also to the military field, expressing the need to continue supporting the task of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) as the sole provider of the national security through UNIFIL under Resolution UNSCR 1701 (2006).
