The signature of the peace agreement today in Colombia is good news not only for the country and for the people of Colombia, but for the whole world. Today Colombia has the courage to turn the page after a 50-year long conflict, and shows to the entire world that peace is possible and can become reality, with leadership and determination. Colombia today is sending a message of hope to the rest of the globe.
The EU has actively supported this peace process from its very beginning. The presence at the ceremony of my special envoy, Mr Eamon Gilmore, who represents me, bears witness to our commitment.
But our contribution to the agreement goes well beyond symbolism.
Exactly today, the European Union Council will take the decision to suspend FARC from its list of terrorist organisations. This decision will take effect upon the signature of the Peace Agreement.
And we are ready to continue our support, focusing on the implementation of the agreement after the plebiscite will have taken place. We are in fact ready to launch support package, including Trust Fund, worth of a 600 million euros, with the active contribution of many of our Member States.
Today peace is in the hands of the Colombian people. An endorsement of the Agreement would send positive shockwaves through the continent and the entire world. It would send a message of reconciliation. It would send the powerful message that all conflicts can come to an end, when we all contribute to making peace possible.
