The event "Constitutional Justice in Transitional Democracy: Success and Challenges of Constitutional Review in Georgia and Eastern Europe" was opened by the President of Georgia Mr. Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of the Constitutional Court of Georgia Mr. George Papuashvili, Vice-president of the Venice Commission Ms.Herdis Kjerulf Thorgeirsdottir and the Deputy Head of EU Delegation to Georgia, Mr Carlo Natale.
Mr Natale welcomed the participants of the conference, noting the exceptional progress of reforms in Georgia's justice sector and reiterated continuous and targeted EU support to the Constitutional Court: "Our commitment to strengthening democracy and rule of law in Georgia was raised to a new level with signing the Association Agreement. We will continue to support the Court and encourage its professionality, integrity, independence and transparency within our cooperation programmes."
The conference participants exchanged lessons learnt from recent developments and tendencies in the constitutional law and positions of the constitutional courts in Eastern European countries. Professionals from Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia and Georgia, as well as representatives from the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights took active part in the discussions.
The conference was organized by Georgia's Constitutional Court in the framework of project “Support to the Constitutional Court of Georgia”, funded by the EU and the Council of Europe. The event was also supported by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
