EU at UNGA76: High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell travels to New York

From 20 to 24 September, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, will travel to New York on the occasion of the start of the 76th United Nations General Assembly. High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell will host and participate in a number of high-level events and bilateral meetings throughout the high-level week.

On Monday, 20 September, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell, together with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will meet the UN Secretary General António Guterres. In the evening, High Representative Borrell will chair the traditional informal meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers. He will deliver a press statement at the end of the meeting (20:00 EST).

On Tuesday, 21 September, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will join President Michel and President von der Leyen for the opening session of the General Debate of the 76th UN General Assembly. The High Representative will host an EU-Gulf Cooperation Council meeting. In the evening, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will convene leaders from the Western Balkans for a working dinner.

On Wednesday, 22 September, High Representative Borrell will participate in a Ministerial meeting on the Libya Peace process, co-hosted by Germany, Italy and France. He will then attend the virtual G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting on Afghanistan. In the evening, High Representative Borrell will participate at a High-level EU-Africa dinner, hosted by President Michel.

On Thursday, 23 September, High Representative Borrell will chair the first meeting of the Regional Platform on Afghanistan, which will convene Afghanistan’s neighbours and the United Nations to discuss the situation in the country and the way forward. The meeting is part of the EU and its Member States' efforts to engage with Afghanistan's neighbours and regional partners. High Representative Borrell will hold a press conference at the end of the meeting (10:30 EST). The same day, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will deliver a statement at the virtual Ministerial Conference on Article XIV of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

On Friday, 24 September, High Representative/Vice-President Borrell will accompany President Michel, who will deliver the statement on behalf of the EU during the General Debate of the 76th UN General Assembly.

Throughout the week, the High Representative will hold a series of bilateral meetings with international interlocutors.
