Press releases

The Call for Applications closes on 20 October 2020

Today, the European Union together with UNOPS are launching the Resilience Scholarship Award. The purpose of the scholarship is to help qualified Somali students to attain a Bachelors and Master’s degree in a variety of fields related to resilience, including climate change adaptation, livelihoods, nutrition, durable solutions and sustainable development in selected postgraduate study programmes at any certified university across the region.

The scholarship has been set up as part of the EU’s ongoing efforts to strengthen educational opportunities for youth, in particular young girls, with the goal of transforming Somali students’ expertise in the knowledge and practice of resilience building. In the face of climate change and its effects: droughts, floods, desertification and other environmental crises facing Somalia, building resilience will be even more crucial in the coming years and decades.

If stability and participation are the pillars for a prosperous future, education represents its multiplying effect. The Resilience Scholarship Award is just one example of EU’s commitment to the future of Somalia,” said the EU Ambassador to Somalia Nicolas Berlanga. “Building expertise relating to resilience and climate change will encourage durable solutions for the future. Additionally, 50 percent of the scholarships will be allocated for female students to make sure women scholars take full part in Somalia’s development,” the Ambassador added.

The Resilience Scholarship Award is intended to cover student costs for a one-year cycle, where relevant. Up to 20 scholarships will be awarded to eligible students with 50% going to women applicants. The list of scholarship recipients will be announced at the end of November 2020.
