The Senior Officials of the International Contact Group (ICG) met today in Brussels to discuss the latest developments in Venezuela.
They were debriefed by the Special Adviser Enrique Iglesias on his mission to Caracas where he held contacts with all the relevant political actors and with civil society. During this mission, the Special Adviser expressed strong support of the ICG to the Oslo process in order to achieve a peaceful and democratic solution through free and transparent presidential elections, as well as the need to obtain urgent results given the worsening humanitarian situation.
The Senior Officials discussed the latest initiatives of the working groups in the electoral and humanitarian fields. They agreed on the continuation of the outreach efforts with relevant international partners, including through the participation of the Special Adviser in the Lima Group meeting in Buenos Aires as well as in the International Conference on Venezuela to be held in Lima on 6 August, and the close contacts with CARICOM countries.
They also agreed to continue efforts of humanitarian diplomacy to facilitate the establishment and the operations of humanitarian actors in the country. They underlined the urgent need to increase humanitarian funding and to support ongoing efforts for donors' coordination.
