Moving forward with a highly ambitious and comprehensive free-trade deal, Europe and Japan demonstrate to the world - and to our citizens - that free trade, with clear and transparent rules fully respecting and enhancing our values, remains an important tool to promote prosperity in our societies. The EU-Japan Economic Partnership agreement will be the most important bilateral trade agreement ever concluded by the EU and will for the first time include a specific commitment to the Paris climate agreement.
The Strategic Partnership Agreement will also give the EU and Japan the means to ensure shared responsibility for achieving peace, stability and prosperity of the world.
"Our European Union and Japan are already cooperating closely in a wide range of areas: from tackling climate change to countering piracy; from dealing with security threats in our respective neighbourhoods to environmental standards and sustainability", said EU High Representative Federica Mogherini. "What the Strategic Partnership Agreement will do is reinforce our partnership to work on new areas of cooperation, for example in cyber-security and disaster management. It's a real step up for our partnership, reflecting the importance we give to our relationship: one that is able to effectively tackle the challenges we face."
The Agreement covers issues that are bilateral, regional and global in nature, and will allow the EU and Japan to find solutions to common challenges, such as energy security, migration, and security challenges, and provides a tool for the EU and Japan to jointly promote global peace, stability and prosperity, as well as an open international system.
Negotiations on the two agreements are expected to be rapidly finalised
