Press releases

Mr. Daniel Weiss, Charge de Affaires of the Delegation of the European Union to Sudan received today Ms Deima Al Haj, a 12 years old school girl who interviewed him on the occasion of the International Day of the African Child 2021.

International Day of the African Child has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991.  The day honors those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976, when 45 years ago, on June 16 about 10,000 school children marched to protest against the poor quality of their education in South Africa.

Today many countries and International organizations are celebrating this day to raise awareness of the continuing need for improvement of the education provided to African children.

Mr. Daniel Weiss stressed that for the EU “ investing in education is investing in the future”. The European Union in Sudan is funding local and international organizations to tackle malnutrition of children, invest in training of teachers, provide education in emergency situations, provide school education supplies, solar lighting for reading at home, assist with supplementary feeding to children under 5, encourage take-home food children programs, provide child friendly spaces in the camps for internally displaced persons and refugee camps and promotes access to education for girls.  Mr. Daniel said there are around 3 million Sudanese children who are out of schools.  Thus, providing access and ensuring quality of education for all Sudanese children, particularly for girls, requires collective efforts and commitment at individual and community level with support from private sector, civil society, and the government.
