Phone call between the High Representative/Vice-President, Federica Mogherini and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Fumio Kishida

The High Representative/Vice-President, Federica Mogherini spoke this morning with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Fumio Kishida in light of the latest nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 9 September.

The High Representative and the Foreign Minister fully shared the view that the nuclear test constitutes yet another provocative act and a threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, in Asia and beyond. The latest nuclear test – the second of its kind in under a year - is a clear and repeated violation of the DPRK's international obligations not to produce or test nuclear weapons, as determined by numerous United Nations Security Council Resolutions, and a direct challenge to the disarmament and non-proliferation regime. The High Representative will work with her counterparts in the EU Member States to ensure close coordination with Japan and other strategic partners in adopting a new and robust UN Security Council Resolution in response to this latest act, which also violates the most recent statement of the Six-Party Talks. The High Representative reiterated that, as has been the case previously, the European Union would fully implement any new UN Security Council Resolution.

High Representative Mogherini briefed the Foreign Minister on preparations for the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan, to be co-hosted by the European Union and held in Brussels on 4-5 October 2016. The HR/VP and the Minister agreed that the Conference will be an important opportunity for the international community to demonstrate its continued support to the Afghan people and to peace, stability and prosperity in the country.
