Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission, met with the Turkish Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik today in Brussels.

She expressed again the European Union's most sincere condolences for the tragic attack at the Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport, which claimed the lives of 42 people and injured 239 others. The meeting today took place just after the Inter-Governmental Conference on the Opening of Chapter 33. These are the core values of the European Union that all candidate countries need to promote and defend.

The High Representative and the Minister also touched upon the crucial importance of Cyprus settlement talks, as well as the challenges linked to Visa Liberalisation and migration and the situation in the region. Federica Mogherini highlighted the importance of the agreement between Israel and Turkey.

The High Representative also reiterated the need for a genuine internal political dialogue in the framework of the Kurdish settlement process, while stressing that the EU recognises the PKK as a terrorist organisation and that the Member States have taken robust action against the group in Europe.
