For the third time, senior officials from the European Union and the Republic of Korea (RoK) met today to discuss a broad range of cyber issues. The delegation of the Republic of Korea was led by H.E. Shin Maeng-Ho, Ambassador for International Security Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Joëlle Jenny, Director for Security Policy and Conflict Prevention at the European External Action Service welcomed them to Brussels as head of the EU delegation, which also included representatives from the Commission and Member States.

As emphasised in the latest EU-ROK Summit statement September 2015 the EU and the RoK recognise "…the importance of ensuring the openness and security of the cyberspace for it to continue being a driving force for the freedom, prosperity and economic growth of mankind."

Topics discussed during the Dialogue included international security in relation to cyberspace, Internet governance, cybersecurity, cyber capacity building in third countries, and combatting cybercrime. Both delegations shared their views on recent developments both globally and in their respective regions, explored potential areas for further cooperation, and reaffirmed their continued cooperation including through these annual consultations.

These cyber policy consultations are prime examples of the“future-oriented partnership" being pursued by the European Union and the Republic of Korea, which aims at strengthening cooperation and collaboration not only on bilateral and regional issues, but also on global issues. The Annual Cyber Dialogue was created as agreed by the heads of the two sides at the EU-RoK Summit in November 2013, and the first consultations were held in Brussels in May 2014, followed by a meeting in Seoul in April 2015.
