EUNAVFOR ASPIDES: The EU Ambassador to Djibouti Visits the ASPIDES’ Italian Naval Unit ITS CAIO DUILIO

On August 28, in Djibouti, H.E. Dr. Denisa-Elena Ionete, Ambassador of the European Union to Djibouti, paid an official visit on board the Italian naval unit ITS CAIO DUILIO, currently participating in the European Union Naval Operation ASPIDES. 

ASPIDES Force Commander (FCdr), Rear Admiral Andrea Quondamatteo, accompanied by Captain Daniele Vailati, Commander of ITS CAIO DUILIO, welcomed her on board.

The Force Commander gave a comprehensive briefing on the mission, outlining its objectives, activities, and strategic importance. She also met the international staff that supports the mission's tactical command.

During a brief ship tour, the advanced capabilities of the NH90 helicopter on board ITS CAIO DUILIO were also presented.

Ambassador Ionete praised the professionalism and dedication of crew members, men and women serving in the mission. She reiterated the European Union's strong commitment to support Operation ASPIDES and underlined the EU's determination to contribute actively to maritime security in the region.

This visit reaffirms the European Union's dedication to strengthening international cooperation and maintaining a robust presence in a region essential for global security and protecting international trade routes.

EUNAVFOR ASPIDES is a defensive Naval Operation launched by the European Union with the aim of safeguarding freedom of navigation in critical waters, including the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Sea of Oman, the Gulf, and the northwestern Indian Ocean. Its primary objectives are to protect and escort merchant vessels and to enhance maritime situational awareness in these vital sea lanes.
