Maputo, Mozambique – The closing ceremony of the Basic Theoretical Ammunition Course took place last Tuesday at the Maputo Military Driving School. The course was delivered by a Mobile Training Team from the Austrian Armed Forces, with the support of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ), and was attended by members of the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces (FADM) from 16 to 31 March.

The ceremony was presided over by the EUMAM MOZ Mission Force Commander, Commodore César Pires Correia, and attended by Brigadier General Elias Paulo Mataruca, Director of the Logistics Department of the FADM General Staff.

Over the past two weeks, participating personnel benefited from intensive training focused on developing competencies and consolidating essential knowledge in a critical area for the safety and operational effectiveness of the FADM, namely the handling, storage, and management of ammunition.

During the ceremony, the Mission Force Commander highlighted the importance of the training, underlining that “training in this field requires rigour, responsibility and the highest standards of professionalism — qualities which we are confident have been fully assimilated over the past two weeks.” Addressing the trainees, he also expressed appreciation “for the commitment, dedication and discipline demonstrated,” emphasising that the knowledge acquired is “a fundamental tool that must now be applied responsibly and shared with your peers, contributing to the continued strengthening of the FADM’s capabilities.”

The training pathway will continue with the Basic Practical Ammunition Course, scheduled to take place from 25 May to 5 June 2026, primarily aimed at those who have completed this theoretical phase. This next stage will enable participants to consolidate their knowledge in a practical and operational context.

These courses form part of a sustained capacity-building approach, aimed at equipping the FADM with robust and lasting technical skills capable of addressing current and future security challenges.

Through this initiative, EUMAM MOZ reaffirms its commitment to developing the capabilities of the FADM, contributing to more prepared and more effective armed forces in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado.

EUMAM MOZ is a non-executive mission with a mandate until June 2026, focused on the operational training cycle and maintenance, while also providing advisory support and specialised training to enable the FADM to become self-sufficient in addressing the insurgency.

The partnership between the European Union and Mozambique continues to stand as a solid pillar in promoting peace, security, and capacity development. The delivery of this course represents another tangible example of this shared commitment, reflected in the exchange of specialised technical knowledge and the strengthening of capabilities for more effective and better-prepared armed forces.
