EUMAM MOZ and EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA strengthen ties in Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique – Under the visit of the Italian Ship (ITS) ‘LUIGI RIZZO’ to Mozambique, European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Operation ATALANTA and the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ) strengthen ties during mutual visits between 8-15 April 2025. 

EUMAM MOZ Mission Force Commander (MFCdr), Brigadier General Luís Barroso, welcomed EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA Force Commander (FCdr), Italian Navy Rear Admiral Davide Da Pozzo and ITS ‘LUIGI RIZZO’ Commanding Officer, Commander Giuseppe Lucafò, to the headquarters for a courtesy visit.  

The EUMAM MOZ personnel also had the opportunity to be welcomed on board to tour the ship and understand how it contributes to the implementation of EU programmes aimed to enhance the regional maritime security architecture.

These courtesy visits emphasise the joint commitment of the EU and its Member States to Mozambique and are made to maintain close linkages with EU representations across the region.  

EUMAM MOZ and ATALANTA are part of the EU´s integrated approach in Africa, which lays out a number of operational approaches and principles for the EU to ensure that the security dimension is integrated in the relevant policies and instruments of the EU peace and security work, from development and humanitarian action to conflict prevention and crisis response. 

EUNAVFOR ATALANTA plays a vital role in the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy & EU’s Naval Diplomacy for the Indo-Pacific.

EUMAM MOZ has a non-executive mandate that runs until 20 June 2026. The aim of the mission is to support the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces in protecting the civilian population and restoring safety and security in the Cabo Delgado province.
