UNAIR hosts Indonesia's first EU Centre

The European Union (EU) Centre at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) serves as a strategic platform for strengthening the partnership between the EU and Indonesia across the fields of higher education, research, academic mobility, community engagement and intellectual exchange.

The EU Centre fosters not only academic collaboration but also social and cultural connectivity between Europe and Indonesia. Through seminars, guest lectures, panel discussions, film screenings and other interdisciplinary initiatives, the EU Centre promotes dialogue, knowledge-sharing and artistic expression among students, scholars, policymakers and the wider public.

Over the years, the EU Centre has been guided by five core commitments: enhancing academic accessibility, strengthening EU visibility and public awareness, expanding education and research opportunities, reinforcing EU-Indonesia networks and partnerships, and encouraging active engagement in European affairs.

Launch of the EU Centre UNAIR

The EU Centre at UNAIR was officially inaugurated on 21 November 2024. The launch was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universitas Airlangga, represented by Rector Prof. Dr Mohammad Nasih, S.E., M.T., Ak., and the EU Delegation to Indonesia, represented by EU Ambassador Denis Chaibi.

The inauguration ceremony brought together academics, consular representatives and representatives from European embassies in Indonesia, reflecting the strong and growing partnership between the EU and Indonesia.

During the event, Ambassador Denis Chaibi emphasised that the establishment of the EU Centre at Universitas Airlangga represents the EU’s continued commitment to strengthening and expanding cooperation with Indonesia, particularly in the areas of education, research, innovation and people-to-people connectivity.

Programme

As a centre for European studies, information and academic exchange, the EU Centre at UNAIR continues to develop a range of flagship programmes designed to strengthen engagement between Indonesia and Europe.

One of its signature initiatives is the Model European Union (MEU), a parliamentary simulation programme that brings together students from across Indonesia to deepen their understanding of European governance, diplomacy, and policymaking processes.

The EU Centre also organises the EU Scholarship Masterclass, which equips Indonesian students with practical insights, guidance and first-hand perspectives on pursuing higher education opportunities at universities across Europe.

In addition, the EU Centre serves as an important bridge between European embassies in Indonesia and Indonesian academic communities. Through embassy visits, dissemination of research and funding opportunities, and facilitation of academic partnerships between Indonesian and European universities, the EU Centre actively promotes international collaboration, knowledge exchange and long-term institutional connectivity.
