EUAM Iraq Deputy Head of Mission Ms. Anne Meskanen had the honor to deliver a speech at the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service conference. The event was opened by H.E. Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi.

The US-trained Counter Terrorism Service was formed after 2003 US invasion of Iraq and trained and equipped by the United States. The CTS troops are considered one of the best trained Iraqi forces. The CTS played a vital role in the nine-month battle in 2017 to liberate Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city.

The academic conference gathered several high-level professors from Iraqi universities to discuss the stabilisation of Iraq and challenges the country is facing after the defeat of Daesh.

During her speech, Ms. Meskanen introduced EUAM Iraq’s mandate and main activities.

- Civilian Security Sector Reform (SSR) is a fundamental component in the overall multifaceted and interconnected fight against terrorism. Civilian SSR can significantly contribute to combatting and preventing the phenomenon of terrorism, Ms. Meskanen stated.
