About the EOM to Zambia
The European Union Election Observation Mission is led by Chief Observer, Maria Arena, a Member of the European Parliament from Belgium. In total, the mission will comprise around 60 observers from 24 EU Member States and Norway. A core team of ten analysts arrived in Lusaka on 30 June. The core team assesses all aspects and stages of the electoral process, including political, electoral and legal issues, and is supported by logistical and security experts
EOM to Zambia
The EU has deployed an Election Observation Mission to observe the elections following an invitation by the President of Zambia.
The mission’s mandate is to observe all aspects of the electoral process and assess the extent to which the elections comply with international and regional commitments for elections, as well as with the laws of Zambia.
The EOM is independent in its findings from the EU Delegation to Zambia, EU member states, and all EU institutions.
The EU EOM will observe and assess:
- the legal framework and its implementation;
- the work of the election administration;
- campaign activities;
- the role of state institutions and civil society;
- the conduct of the media;
- voting, counting and tabulation;
- the environment in which the election is being conducted;
- the complaints and appeals process.
