Chief Observer, Marisa Matias, meets voters on election day in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo

Chief Observer, Marisa Matias, Member of the European Parliament from Portugal, was out and about in Colombo on the day of the 16 November presidential election.

She was joining around 80 observers, including 30 long-term and 30 short-term observers and a delegation of five members of the European Parliament, who were observing at polling stations in Sri Lanka's nine provinces and 22 electoral districts. At the conclusion they moved on to the counting centres.

"Throughout the day and night, our observers were feeding data and information back to headquarters, giving us a representative picture of the execution of the technical aspects of polling day," Ms Matias said.

This is the sixth election in Sri Lanka that the European Union will have sent an observation mission to. Previous missions were in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2015.
