The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Kenya 2017 has learned of a letter currently circulating on social media, carrying entirely false reference to the mission on the conduct of the pre-election campaign in Kenya.
The comments are presented in a letter bearing the logo of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), dated 24 July 2017. In the letter, the EU EOM is falsely attributed as working with USIP and warning about violence. USIP denounced one such earlier letter as fraudulent on 22 June (see website).
The EU EOM Kenya 2017 is carrying out its observation of Kenya’s general elections, scheduled for 8 August, according to its mandate of strict impartiality, neutrality and non-interference.
The mission operates independently of all other international election observation missions and organisations supporting credible, transparent and peaceful elections. Full details of the mission’s mandate can be seen on our website.
