Winner of the Song Contest Against Child Labour Announced!

Following a 3-month competition and voting process, the European Union-Ghana Employment and Social Protection (EU/GESP) music contest organisers are excited to announce that the duo, Kwame and Kpodo, have won the Song Contest Against Child Labour. They received a laptop computer, carrier bag and an electronic keyboard. Exciting days are ahead for Kwame and Kpodo, as they will now go into the recording studio to record the theme song for the campaign against child labour in Ghana, which will take place early 2021. All three received a laptop computer plus carrier bag, plus an opportunity to record their respective songs in a professional recording studio.

The announcements were made during a colourful event at the Zen Garden in Accra on 12 November 2020.

The event also featured Ghana’s Afro-pop singer-songwriter Wiyaala, who engaged the guest with some catchy performances, and who will also act in the capacity as goodwill ambassador for early next year’s EU/GESP campaign against child labour.

Exciting days are ahead for Kwame and Kpodo, as they will now go into the recording studio to record the theme song for the campaign against child labour in Ghana, which will take place early 2021.

EU Supports the UN's International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour

Following the declaration by the United Nations that 2021 is the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour[SE(1] .

Therefore, the UN Member States are committed to take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms.

The European Union Delegation to Ghana, in contributing to combatting child labour, will launch a campaign against child labour during the first quarter of 2021, in partnership with civil society organisations and the Ghana Employment and Social Protection (GESP) Programme.

As part of the preparations for this campaign, the Delegation launched is a song contest in August 2020. Ghanaian musicians were invited to submit songs themed around child labour in Ghana. Reactions were overwhelming, with over 50 song submissions.

These were put up for public voting during the months of September and October 2020, and generated an impressive 875 votes from 20 different countries across the globe.

The public vote identified one winner per song category:

These four category-winners became the finalists, from which the overall winner was declared by a jury on 12 November 2020.
