Mandela Day Celebrated in Asmara

Celebrating the life of political activist and late former president's birthday, July 18, many government officials and diplomats took to the grounds of the Orotta National Referral Hospital in Asmara on 25 July  in the morning for a tree planting and cleaning activity in tribute to highlight Nelson Mandela's efforts to make the world a better place. This meaningful act of kindness was organized by the United Nations Office in Eritrea in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa.

The afternoon was reserved for a panel discussion at the NCEW Conference Hall under the theme: 'Action Against Poverty' focusing on the role of youth in the fight against poverty. Panel members included representatives from the European Union, NUEYS, PFDJ, University of Asmara, the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa and the UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea as keynote speaker.

Mandela Day was launched in 2009 to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s birthday and his 67 years of public service. This day calls members of civil society to spend at least 67 minutes during the month of July, a minute for every year Mandela worked, doing significant actions that will drive a positive global change, impacting the world we live in today.
