The Chairman of the European Union Military Committee (CEUMC), General Claudio Graziano, paid an official visit to Sweden, from 4th to 5th July 2019.
"In my role as Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, I attach great importance to visiting EU Member States since it provides me with a valuable opportunity to better understand the respective viewpoints and concerns and to make sure that the military voice is heard in the Brussels environment" stated General Graziano in the occasion of his meeting with Swedish political and military representatives in Stockholm.
At his arrival to Sweden, General Graziano met with the Minister of Defence, Mr. Peter Hultqvist. The agenda was rich with topics of common interest, ranging from the implementation of Global Strategy and strategic autonomy, to the cooperation between European Union and NATO, as well as the EU’s relations with Third States.
"The European Union - highlighted General Graziano - is in a very formative phase and the implementation of EU Global Strategy and its different defence initiative will shape our cooperation for some time to come."
Meeting with the Swedish Supreme Commander, General Micael Bydén, the Chairman pointed out that Sweden has consistently provided high quality contributions to Military Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operations for which the EU is very grateful.
General Graziano had also the opportunity to visit the Swedish Berga Garrisons/Naval Base where he was welcomed by the Supreme Commander, Gen. Micael Bydén, and the Deputy Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Anders Olovsson. On that occasion, the Chairman received a comprehensive briefing on the security situation in the Region as well as the ongoing Swedish Defence reforms.
