Statement by the Spokesperson on the elections in Honduras

General elections in Honduras took place on 26 November in a largely peaceful climate - with a strong presence of domestic and international observers - which enabled Honduran citizens to broadly cast their vote freely. The European Union expects candidates and parties to respect the results and to use legal redress mechanisms to solve any electoral disputes.

As highlighted by the EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Preliminary Statement, the legal framework allows the holding of democratic elections, but further electoral reforms should be adopted. The EU stands ready to continue to support Honduras in the strengthening of democracy and the rule of law in the country.

The EU EOM, headed by Chief Observer Marisa Matias, a Member of the European Parliament, has been deployed to Honduras since October and will remain in country until the electoral process is completed.
