Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, started the week chairing the FAC. The Council was dominated by the ongoing crisis in Syria and Iraq and the threat of ISIL. She reassured that "all the EU member states and the EU as such are, in one way or another, involved in the fight against Da'esh".
Mogherini went on to chair the first meeting of the Association Council under the new Association Agreement with Ukraine. The EU and Ukraine reconfirmed the common objective to build a democratic, stable and prosperous country. After that she headed to Kyiv on 16 and 17 December to hold meetings with the Ukrainian leadership, representatives of the opposition and civil society.
On Wednesday evening, Mogherini took part in the "EuroChanukah Peace 2014" event in Brussels. It illustrates the message that "a small light can dissolve much darkness" and is an important symbol in this turbulent period in the Middle East.
Mogherini held on Thursday a video conference with CSDP missions and operations. She congratulated them for their work, achievements and engagement. She also paid tribute to those who have lost their lives or were injured while on mission on the ground. Mogherini also expressed her intention to visit all missions and operations in the coming years.
Other activities of Mogherini this week included meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kosovo Hashim Thaçi and Prime Minister of Moldova Iurie Leancă in Brussels. In her statement on the occasion of Thaçi's visit, Mogherini said: "We agreed that, now that there is a new government in Pristina, work should resume at an intensified pace in the EU reform agenda so that good progress can be made in the next year, both in its internal development and in its EU path."
In the end of this week, Mogherini participated in the European Council. Upon her arrival at the Council, she reflected on the Ukraine crisis and Russia's role in it, saying: "I want to make clear one thing: the situation of Russia, the fact that Russia is in a difficult situation from a financial point of view, is not good news."
