A wonderful evening of European Christmas carols

12/12/2014 - 00:00

About 1,500 music enthusiasts packed the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa on 12 December for a wonderful evening of European Christmas carols. The 7th European Union Christmas Concert featured carols and songs in 20 different languages, performed by the Ottawa Children's Choir, the Chorale De La Salle and the Calixa Lavallé Choir. Special guests included mezzo-soprano Terri-Ann Priel, who was accompanied by Ernie Cox on piano, soprano Natalya Gennadi Matyusheva and Timothy Piper on organ.

In her remarks, EU Ambassador Marie-Anne Coninsx recognized the choirs, including Ottawa Children's Choir director Jackie Hawley, Chorale De La Salle director Robert Filion and Calixa Lavallé Choir director Laurence Ewashko, for their contributions to the concert's growing success.

"Learning to sing in so many languages is no easy task. It takes months of rehearsals and preparation. I would like to recognize their efforts and congratulate them on this great success," Ambassador Coninsx said. The concert is organized by the EU Delegation to Canada and the Diplomatic Missions of EU Member States.

The concert airs on 16 December at 12 p.m. on Rogers TV 22.
