Statement by the Spokesperson on the attacks on police facilities and security personnel in Afghanistan

Text

Once again, Afghanistan was hit by terror: yesterday’s attacks on a police training centre in the eastern Afghan city of Gardez and a district centre in neighbouring Ghazni province left dozens dead, including many civilians, and around two hundreds injured. Our thoughts are with those killed and injured in the attacks as well as with the victims’ families.

The European Union stands by Afghanistan in its efforts to end the brutal insurgency which has cost so many innocent lives; the EU and its Member States' long-term commitment to promoting peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan has been underlined by the EU foreign ministers who on 16 October adopted an EU Strategy on Afghanistan. The EU will continue to support the strengthening of Afghan civilian police forces, aiming at building peace and security and creating trust among the civilian population.
