EU Civilian Operations Commander travels to Chisinau to check on progress and build links with NATO and OSCE

On 17thJuly, Stefano TOMAT, Civilian Operations Commander and EEAS Managing Director CPCC, the Headquarters for all EU CSDP civilian missions, visited the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova (EUPM). He was there to check on progress made  since the mission was launched 6 weeks ago. EUPM  is  the youngest of the EU’s 13 civilian CSDP Missions deployed on three continents. EUPM is mandated to strengthen Moldova’s internal security sector through strategic level advice and operational support. Stefano Tomat was briefed by  EUPM Head of Mission Cosmin DINESCU and EUPM staff on the operationalisation of the Mission's mandate to support Moldova's crisis management structures and its ability to counter hybrid threats.

One of the key aspect of EUPM’s mandate lies in its capacity to interact and bring together all the efforts of the international community on the ground. To that effect, Stefano TOMAT met with the Head of NATO Liaison office in Moldova, Ms Michaela Simakova. The main focus of NATO's cooperation in Moldova is to support the country's efforts to reform its defence and security structures. A support package to help Moldova strengthen its national resilience and civil preparedness was agreed in 2022 at the NATO Summit in Madrid. Today's discussion focused on potential areas of cooperation in the fields of cybersecurity, strategic communication and resilience towards hybrid threats. Stefano Tomat also met with the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Ms. Kelly Keiderling to exchange information on the activities of the two respective missions in Moldova.
