China: High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell meets Director/Foreign Minister Wang Yi

High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell met with his Chinese counterpart, Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday, 16 February in the margins of the Munich Security Conference.

They discussed EU-China bilateral relations, in particular following up from the EU-China Summit held in December 2023. 

They also discussed Russia’s unjustified war against Ukraine including its destabilizing global effects. High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell expressed the EU’s expectation that China refrains from supporting Russia. He encouraged China to engage on Ukraine’s Peace Formula, including by joining the Global Peace Summit. He reiterated the EU’s strong resolve to support Ukraine both on the military and civilian side.

High Representative Borrell and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also discussed the situation in the Middle East. High Representative Borrell expressed strong concern over the humanitarian situation and the wider consequences for the region. He stressed the need to lower regional tensions and promote international efforts towards a two state solution.

On Taiwan, High Representative Borrell explained that the EU’s position remains unchanged, in support of the “One China” policy, stressing that the EU wants to preserve peace and stability in the region. The High Representative hoped for the next EU - China Human Rights Dialogue to take place soon.

He invited his counterpart to visit Brussels to continue a discussion on war and peace, which both the EU and China want for a more prosperous world.
