Two EU side events were organised at the margins of the Plenary Assembly.
On Monday 11thJuly, the EU Delegation organised the side event entitled: "EU Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements (SFPA): Transparent, Coherent and Mutually Beneficial Tool: How did SFPAs become a benchmark for good fisheries governance in the world?". The side event opened by Mr Aguiar Machado, EU DG MARE Director-Generaland also addressed by Mr Roberto Cesari, EU DG MARE Head of Unit for Bilateral Fisheries Agreement, briefed the participants on how the EU, through bilateral agreements, enhances fisheries governance for sustainable exploitation. SFPAs are a tool for good governance and transparent management of fisheries based on three principles: Sustainability, Transparency and Partnership.
On Tuesday 12thJuly, the EU Delegation organized the side event "Where are we with the fight against IUU? The EU perspective". The EU was represented by EU DG Mare DG, Mr Aguiar Machado and Mr Fabrizio Donatella, EU DG Mare Head of Unit for Fisheries Control Policy. The event offered an insight of the EU policy against illegal, unregulated and uncontrolled (IUU) fisheries, based on implementing preventing and controlling systems undertaken in partnership with third countries in specific regional contexts.
A question and answer session was scheduled after both Side Events, which allowed for an active participation of those attending. Publication desks were also set up for both events with relevant DG MARE publications.
Finally, on Wednesday 13thJuly, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) organized the side event "Smartfish Programme" and invited the EU Delegation to provide its contribution. Mr José-Manuel Capitan Romero, Attaché/Press and Information Officer of the EU Delegation, presented the main outcomes of the programme, resulting in improved regional capacities for fisheries development and management. This programme has been financed by the EU for an amount of 36 million Euros.
The EU DG MARE Director-General, Mr Aguiar Machado also participated to the Special Event held at FAO on 11 July, on Port State Measures Agreement to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. The Ceremony was opened by the FAO DG, Mr José Graziano da Silva, who handed out recognition scrolls to Parties that adhered to the Agreement including DG MARE Director-General. Mr Aguiar Machado also had a bilateral meeting and an interview with the FAO Office for Corporate Communication.
