Nauru - 05 September, 2018 – Today, the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), the Pacific Community (SPC), the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and The University of the South Pacific (USP) signed a landmark agreement with the European Union to help promote sustainable management and sound ocean governance in the Pacific Region.
The EU acknowledges that the Blue Pacific is about Pacific people across all the Pacific islands, recognising their needs and potential and their plans for their future. This will be at the core of the EU's partnership with the Pacific and therefore part of the renewed Agreement between the EU and the countries of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific group of states, the negotiations of which will be launched in the next weeks. The EU is confident that this new partnership will be inclusive and anchored in the collective strength of the Pacific region.
On 18 July, the European Commission has lifted its “yellow card” for Tuvalu. The yellow card is an official warning of the European Union towards its trading partners in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. By lifting the card, the European Commission recognises the important progress of Tuvalu in addressing the shortcomings in its fisheries governance.
