Following the construction of a support structure by a local Somali contractor, a team from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) installed the radar scanner, which in turn is a donation by EUCAP Somalia, a civilian Mission under the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy. This practical cooperation between Somali authorities, a Somali contractor, a UN team and an EU team is a good example of the integrated approach by which the international community works together in Somalia.

The commander of the Bosasso Port Maritime Police, Colonel Hashi, defined the installation of the radar scanner as an important step forward on the way towards maritime situational awareness.

Launched in 2012 EUCAP Somalia contributes to the establishment and capacity building of maritime civilian law enforcement capability in Somalia, including Somaliland. EUCAP Somalia is based in Mogadishu with field offices in Hargeisa (Somaliland), Garowe (Puntland), Mogadishu and a back-office in Nairobi, Kenya.
