Tonga and the EU
The Kingdom of Tonga is an archipelago of 176 islands – 52 of which are inhabited by 104,000 people.
In 2006, Tonga embarked on a programme of legislative reforms towards becoming a fully functioning constitutional monarchy.
The joint initiative, worth €21 million, was launched during yesterday's One Planet Summit in New York. Less than a year after it was announced by French President Macron at the 2017 edition of the Summit, the EU, France, Australia and New Zealand have joined forces to make it a reality.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini and EU Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc today presented the EU's vision for a new and comprehensive strategy to improve connectivity between Europe and Asia.
Nauru - 05 September, 2018 – Today, the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), the Pacific Community (SPC), the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and The University of the South Pacific (USP) signed a landmark agreement with the European Union to help promote sustainable management and sound ocean governance in the Pacific Region.
The EU acknowledges that the Blue Pacific is about Pacific people across all the Pacific islands, recognising their needs and potential and their plans for their future. This will be at the core of the EU's partnership with the Pacific and therefore part of the renewed Agreement between the EU and the countries of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific group of states, the negotiations of which will be launched in the next weeks. The EU is confident that this new partnership will be inclusive and anchored in the collective strength of the Pacific region.
Nauru, 04 September 2018- The European Union (EU) has today endorsed the mobilization of EUR 2 million (TOPS 5.3 million) to the Kingdom of Tonga to support recovery efforts following the significant damage caused by tropical cyclone Gita in February of this year.
