IX EU-LAC Reflection Forum

02/10/2019 - 18:00

The event took place over two days in Montevideo and was well attended by local and international authorities.

At a well-attended opening session on 2 October, Foreign Undersecretay Ariel Bergamino and EU Ambassador Karl-Otto König began the IX EU-LAC Reflection Forum “Building inclusive societies under the new development paradigm”.

The two-day Forum (2-3 October) was organised by the EU-LAC Foundation, the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation, the OECD, the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the EU's Eurosocial programme.

Almost one hundred people attended, including representatives of cooperation offices from most Latin American countries, EU Member States, DEVCO and Uruguayan civil society.

The focus of the Forum was to reflect on the role of international cooperation in the context of the 2030 Agenda and the ‘development in transition’ initiative.

In the conclusions of the Forum, participants highlighted (i) the need for closer collaboration between the EU and LAC countries through reinforced political dialogue to address the growth of vulnerabilities in Latin America, (ii) the importance of digital economy, (iii) the need to increase cooperation among stakeholders and with the private sector in particular, and (iv) the need to remain flexible in addressing challenges.
