Valletta

High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met with the Foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in Valetta on Thursday. The meeting was a continuation of their intensive exchanges held over the last months, most recently over the phone on 23 July.

Turkey is as an important partner for the European Union. EU Member States wish to see the mutual relations strengthened, reversing current negative trends.

The talks in Valetta took place ahead of the informal meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers (Gymnich) on 27-28 August in Berlin, where relations with Turkey will be discussed again, as a follow up to the debate held at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on the 13 of July.

The High Representative explained to Minister Çavuşoğlu the outcome of that debate. They had an open and frank exchange on EU-Turkey relations and on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as on key regional issues, in particular on conflicts in Libya and Syria.
