Statement by the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini following the death of the President of the Republic of Tunisia, Beji Caid Essebsi

Text

The European Union is in mourning alongside Tunisia, our partner, friend and neighbour in the Mediterranean.

Over the years, President Beji Caid Essebsi has been a courageous and respected protagonist of Tunisian democratic life, convinced of the importance of a close partnership with the European Union. With his death, Tunisia has lost one of its most competent and determined leaders in building a democratic and prosperous Tunisia, capable of delivering a better future for its people and a model for the region.

Our thoughts and condolences go to his family and to all the people of Tunisia.

The European Union has renewed its confidence in Tunisia based on the principles of the 2014 Constitution and, more than ever, continues to stand shoulder to shoulder with Tunisia.  It remains committed to strengthening our privileged partnership. The EU-Tunisia Privileged Partnership for Youth, which President Essebsi and I set up together, will remain a key priority for the European Union.
