EU High Representative Borrell visits Iraq

EUAM Iraq Head of Mission, Mr. Christoph Buik had the honor to welcome today the EU High Representative, Mr. Josep Borrell at the Mission’s Headquarters in Baghdad.

Mr. Borrell met with the Mission’s personnel and was briefed on EUAM Iraq’s strategic advisory work on civilian security sector reform.

The EU is committed to its solid partnership with Iraq. Since 2014, the EU has provided more than €1.3 billion in financial cooperation such socio-economic, security and humanitarian.

In his remarks, Mr. Borrell emphasized the importance of free and fair, Iraqi-led and Iraqi-owned elections scheduled to take place on 10 October. For the first time, the European Union will deploy an European Union Election Observation Mission.

The European Union remains strongly committed to the Global Coalition [against Da’esh]. There are also acts of violence and harassment against political activists, journalists and human rights defenders, aspects that need to be addressed accordingly.

Finally, the EU High Representative stressed the importance of good cooperation between the Iraqi central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government.
