Venezuela: Statement by the International Contact Group on the political negotiations in Mexico

02.09.2021
Brussels

The members of the International Contact Group (ICG) welcome the beginning of the comprehensive negotiations, led by Venezuelans themselves, that have begun in Mexico.

Support for a negotiated, peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Venezuela has been an objective of the ICG since its creation.

This inclusive dialogue process can lay the foundations for an agreed solution to the Venezuelan crisis. The members of the Group therefore call on both parties to participate constructively and in good faith at the negotiating table.

The only way out of the crisis that Venezuela is going through, is a political negotiation and the organization of credible, free and transparent elections in accordance with the constitutional and legal framework of Venezuela.

The members of the ICG thank the Kingdom of Norway for its role in organizing this dialogue and for Mexico's support.

The ICG reiterates its call to regional and international partners to give a common response to the situation in Venezuela, in particular by supporting the negotiation process.

This declaration has been agreed by the following ICG members: Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, the European Union, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Panama, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Uruguay.
