Statement by the Spokesperson on the first round of the presidential election in Tunisia

17.09.2019

We have noted the official results of the first round of the presidential election in Tunisia, which took place in a peaceful and orderly manner, despite the time constraints resulting from the election being called early.

A sign of the relationship of trust that exists between the EU and Tunisia and of close cooperation on good governance and democracy, Tunisia had asked the European Union to deploy an election observation mission in order to contribute to making the election process one of high quality in compliance with Tunisia’s laws and international standards. The election observation mission has made public its preliminary findings. The people of Tunisia were able to freely exercise their civic rights.

If the second round of the presidential election and the parliamentary elections take place in similar conditions, the people of Tunisia will have been able to fully exercise their civic rights to make choices and give their future representatives all necessary legitimacy.

The EU will remain committed to supporting the Tunisian people and their authorities.
