A Delegation from the European Union (EU) led by the Acting Head of Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific, Mr Corrado Pampaloni attended the 49th session of the Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA) and the 11th Conference of the Pacific Community held in Noumea, New Caledonia last week.
Overview of the human rights and democracy situation: In 2018, basic human rights were respected in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), such as right to assembly and freedom of speech, and no gross human rights’ abuses were identified. There were however human rights concerns relating to domestic violence and trafficking in human beings that still demanded attention. Other human rights issues include problems related to climate change.
At a time when human rights are challenged on a daily basis with many attempts to undermine the universality and indivisibility of human rights, the EU has remained at the forefront of the protection and promotion of human rights and democracy, be it in international forums, bilaterally with governments or through concrete support to the civil society.
