The Delegation of the European Union issues the following statement in agreement with the Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Romania and the UK High Commission.

The fundamental human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation apply to every human being and are fully recognised and backed by the EU in its diplomatic efforts and development policy.

Every girl and woman has the right to live a life free of violence and pain. And yet, more than 200 million women and girls across the world have been forced to undergo the painful and traumatic practice of Female Genital Mutilation, including 500,000 living in Europe. Millions more girls are at risk of being cut: 68 million girls in 25 countries by 2030.

The Ministry of Environment of the Republic of the Maldives and the SWITCH-Asia Sustainable Consumption and Production Facility, supported by the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and the Maldives (EU), organised Multistakeholder Consultations on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) on 29 January 2019.
