The European Union's (EU) Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, Mr Gilles de Kerchove, visited the Maldives from 13-14 July 2019.
He held high level meetings with the Minister of Defence and National Security Hon. Mariya Ahmed Didi, the Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Sheikh Imran Abdulla, the Minister of Tourism Hon. Ali Waheed, the Director General of Counter Terrorism Brigadier General Zakariyya Mansoor, the Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal, the Commissioner of Police Mr. Mohamed Hameed, as well as the Speaker of the People's Majlis Hon. Mohamed Nasheed. He also paid a courtesy call on the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Ahmed Khaleel.
Mr. de Kerchove commended the efforts underway in the Maldives to step up and coordinate prevention of violent extremism and counterterrorism and underlined the EU's full support in this endeavour.
On this visit, Mr. de Kerchove was accompanied by Ambassador of the EU to the Maldives, His Excellency Tung-lai Margue, EEAS Head of Counter-Terrorism Division, Mr. John Gatt-Rutter, and EEAS Deputy Head of South Asia Division, Mr. Ivo Schutte.
